What Are Election Results?

Election results are the voting data that election officials report after an election. They include all the votes counted, including those received from military and overseas absentee ballots, vote by mail, and provisional ballots. They also include the official, certified results from each polling place and a count of the electoral votes. Election results should be accurate and transparent so that voters have confidence in them.

The 2024 elections saw a historic turnout and a tight race with wide-ranging implications for the country’s future. Many Americans with varying political views are experiencing a range of emotions, from pride and optimism to frustration and fear. According to experts, these feelings can take a toll on mental health and it’s important to seek support when needed.

In the event that a race is very close, some states have laws in place to allow the trailing candidate to request a recount. During the recount process, ballots are examined by hand or by machine to make sure that all votes were counted and there are no clerical errors. Depending on state law, either the original results or the recounted results will be certified as the final results.
