Global drought, or in international terms “global drought”, is an increasingly real and urgent environmental threat. This phenomenon refers to a condition of water shortage that lasts for a long period of time, due to climate change, population growth, and unsustainable water resource management practices. The impact of global drought is very broad, covering the agricultural, health and ecosystem sectors. Globally, more than 2.8 billion people experience water shortages for at least one month a year. This issue is multiplied when considering countries that are economically dependent on the agricultural sector, such as India and Brazil. In the agricultural context, drought results in reduced crop yields, increases food insecurity, and threatens global food security. Drought also impacts public health. Inadequate water leads to a lack of access to proper sanitation, increasing the risk of infectious diseases, such as cholera and diarrhea. This threat becomes increasingly real for vulnerable communities, such as those living in rural areas or urban slums. From an ecosystem perspective, drought causes a decline in biodiversity. Natural habitats, such as forests and swamps, become more flammable and decrease in area. Loss of important species disrupts the balance of ecosystems, affects food chains, and affects the availability of natural resources for humans. One of the main causes and elements that worsen global drought conditions is climate change. Rising earth temperatures cause increased water evaporation, reduce rainfall in some regions, and encourage extreme weather patterns. In mitigation efforts, it is important for countries to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and good water resource management. Technology also plays a crucial role in dealing with global drought. Utilizing efficient irrigation systems, using drought-resistant plants, and innovation in rainwater harvesting are steps that can help overcome the impacts of drought. Apart from that, public education and awareness about saving water is the key to reducing this crisis. Government policies that support sustainable water management and environmental conservation are also very necessary. International cooperation, such as agreements on transnational water resources management, can strengthen global efforts to address this problem. In this context, the role of non-governmental organizations is also very important in supporting local communities to adapt to climate change. Communities can contribute through small steps, such as minimizing water use in daily activities and getting involved in environmental conservation movements. As awareness of this issue increases, it is hoped that more people will be moved to act to preserve global water resources. Thus, while global drought is a major challenge, collective efforts can produce sustainable solutions.
