The government shutdown is set to extend into next week after another round of failed votes on stopgap funding. The Senate isn’t expected to hold further votes until Tuesday, and the House is out of session. Meanwhile, the White House has started laying off federal employees. Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought tweeted Friday that “the RIFs have begun,” referring to reduction-in-force layoffs.

AIR Traffic Control centers that handle flights for Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and Bradley International in Connecticut were short-staffed Thursday night.
