The discovery of Earth-like planets in nearby galaxies has become one of the most exciting topics in modern astronomy. One of the nearby star systems, Alpha Centauri, has a planet known as Proxima Centauri b. The planet is located in the habitable zone, where conditions might support the existence of liquid water, a vital element for life as we know it. Discovered in 2016, Proxima Centauri b has a mass of about 1.17 times that of Earth, making it an attractive candidate for further research. Interestingly, Proxima Centauri b orbits its star, Proxima Centauri, with an orbital period of about 11 days. Even though Proxima Centauri is an M type star, which has a lower luminosity than our sun, the overall conditions on Proxima Centauri b still allow the planet’s surface to have temperatures that support the existence of water. Apart from that, the instability of radiation from this star is also a major concern in further research regarding the potential for life on this planet. Further research into Proxima Centauri b’s atmosphere is being carried out using telescopes on Earth and in space. By analyzing the spectrum of light passing through a planet’s atmosphere, scientists can estimate the chemical composition present and the possible presence of gases such as oxygen or methane, important indicators for life. The SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project has also included Proxima Centauri b in a mission to search for signals that might indicate the existence of intelligent life beyond Earth. Apart from Proxima Centauri b, in recent years, more discoveries of Earth-like planets in nearby galaxies have occurred. For example, the discovery of TRAPPIST-1, a system containing seven rocky planets with three of them located within their star’s habitable zone. Each planet offers different conditions, opening up the possibility for further research into the different atmospheres and potential for life on each planet. The existence of these planets calls into question our understanding of habitability and how life develops in various conditions. Who knows, maybe one day, we will discover that life not only exists on Earth but also out there, on planets that we thought were uninhabited. With advances in technology and ongoing space missions, the hope of finding an Earth-like Mars is getting closer to reality. These discoveries also sparked further exploration in the field of astrobiology, which studies the origins, evolution and possibility of life on other planets. The study of the formation of planets and their interactions with surrounding stars provides important insights into how life arises and survives beyond Earth. With the rapid evolution of technology, future missions like the James Webb Space Telescope are expected to help identify and study more planets in the habitable zone, as well as learn about the unique features of each that may be able to support life. The discovery of these planets not only adds to our understanding of the cosmos but also arouses human curiosity to explore the darkness of outer space more deeply.
